sound problems with kernel series 2.6.24-x-generic

Asked by Hugh Garrioch

Running Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop with hard drive partitioned to run Ubuntu and eComStation. Installed Ubuntu 8.04 running kernel 2.6.22-14-generic and computer performed perfectly. Over time I have installed all recommended updates so that I now have kernels 2.6.24-22-generic to 2,6.24-27-generic onboard. Tried to play DVD recently and no sound. Checked 'sound troubleshooting' from internet and tried to follow their advice. When I type "aplay -l" with kernels 2.6.24-x-generic (x= 23, 24, 25, 26, 27) the response is: aplay: device 205: no sound card found. Using the kernel 2.6.22-14-generic, the response is: card 0: Intel (HDA Intel), device 0: STAC92XX Analog, subdevices:1/1 card 0: Digital card 0:Conexant modem

I am reluctant to blindly make changes to the system in case I destroy the sound system with kernel 2.6.22 and still not fix the sound system with the kernel series 2.6.24. At least now if I want to play a DVD or CD I can select the kernel to use when I boot up. This is my crude 'fix' but I would prefer a more precise solution to the problem.

better install ALSA Mixer and Pulse audio mixer and see your hw is detected there in the configuration tab then select the appropriate switches and adjust sliders for the devices found.

and better still install ubuntu 9.10 as the latest versions are much more trouble free than previous versions of Ubuntu...I have used ubunutu from 6.10 to 10.04 and there is major changes taking place atleast from 9.04 onwards.
And you should find there is no sound problem as soon as new ubuntu release is installed as it carries all the necessary codecs inbuilt by default.

other option is using vlc media player.....open terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install vlc
it will install all the necessary vlc drivers for video and audio so you should not face the problem.
Thanks

I have installed VLC player and it works perfectly when using the kernel 2.6.22-14-generic. When I allow the computer to bootup with any of the 2.6.24.... series kernels the VLC player works fine except there is no sound. Obviously, my sound card is ok as are the codecs etc but something about these later kernels does not agree with my configuration. Thanks for your help.

Mr. Hughes,
It is time to change over to the latest kernels as they are more rigid due to every day improvement in hardware and software technologies. I sincerely hope you should try Ubuntu or Kubuntu 9.10 and feel the difference.

Also you can try and repair fix broken packages in the 2.6.24.xx series by going to tecovery mode in grub menu and then selecting the fix broken packages...who knows it may help in broken dependies which are otherwise overlooked for some odd reason.
Thanks
