Just installed ubuntu 9.10 and the desktop is black and I can't change it to anything else. Upon shutdown the desktop image I have selected flashes on.

Asked by danb

Having just installed Ubuntu 9.10, replacing 8.04, the desktop is black! Everything seems to be working but I can't change the desktop background. I know what to do but when I select a different background nothing happens. I can change the themes without problem but not the background. I have noticed that upon shut down the background image I have selected flashes on momentarily. When I was using 8.04 I did not have this problem. Also, I installed this on another computer with the same CD and this problem did not occur. Could this be a screen resolution issue? I am stumped!

i have the same problem, with an nvidia graphics card, when i updated from karmic to lucid. it seems that it does not recognize the screen resolution and/or frequency.

how can one restart / reset the configuration or trigger the screen autodetection on the command line to get back a working configuration?

on windows it says:

Monitor: Non-Pnp-Monitor
Screen Frequency: 75 Hz
GPU-Processor: GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS
ForceWare-Version: 169.06
Video-BIOS-Version: 5.72.22.62.15

on ubuntu upgrading from karmic to lucid broke the xorg configuration.

I turned off the visual effects and the background image appeared!
