screen saver causing computer to hang up

Asked by James Fidler

only one screen saver item causes my computer to hang up. The problem is that I cannot even go to the screen saver and change it. because as soon as I select the screen saver icon on the system menu the computer is hung up. Is there a way to de select the current screen saver from the terminal? If there is I need to know the exact commands as I am new to UBUNTU and the linux language/commands. I hate to have to uninstall this os as it is really a great OS.

gconf-editor
/apps/gnome-screensaver
uncheck idle_activation_enabled

may help. Just have no screensaver and let the monitor go to stanby using DPMS. You can also use a power saver and turn OFF the monitor.

Can you help with this problem?
