After updating the dual-boot drops into grub without starting the OS

Asked by Paul O'Brien

After taking the updates for 9.10 via Update Manager today 09.03.10 to 2.16.31.-20-generic the system was restarted. At the Wubi-installed Windows/Ubuntu dual-boot option "Ubuntu" was selected. The loader drops into Grub without starting the kernel. System is a Sony Vaio VGN-FW15G Centrino 2 with 2GB RAM 250GB HD ATI Graphics dual-boot Vista. Manual attempts to start 2.16.31-19-generic as a backup also fail.

I went back and got the information that appeared on my screen. I have WUBI with Ubuntu installed on my computer. When asked to select which OS I pick Ubuntu and it goes straight to this screen that reads.

"GNU GRUB version 1.97 beta 4
Minimal Bash-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible commands completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device / file completions".

sh:grub>

Thats all it does, no other commands appear if i "TAB".

That is also my experience. From there I can start a basic Linux kernel using "linux vmlinuz-2.6.31-19-generic" and "initd initrd.img-2.6.31-19-generic". This is command-line only - not even a console - and I cannot "see" the original Ubuntu "root.disk".

I couldn't correct the problem. I had to delete the file,"Ubuntu" and uninstalled completely. For now I have WinXP Pro. and using Puppy Linux off a flash drive till the new release comes out.

I too took the path of least resistance and copied "root.disk" into a Windows directory. Then I uninstalled Ubuntu and reinstalled it, careful not to take any kernel updates to the KK default. After mounting the old "root.disk" in my new shiny install I was able to recover my working files so all is well again. For all their problems, I have never had a catastrophic failure with Windows XP or Vista using automatic updating on my four computers, a Dell 8300, HP Dimension t690.uk, Toshiba Satellite P100 and Sony Vaio VGN-FW15G, whereas I have had problems with Ubuntu on the Toshiba and Sony (haven't dared install it on the Dell or HP). However, Ubuntu, Linux and all the OS support and software packages are very, very good when they are working, especially for a "back-in-the-day" Unix scribbler like me, a real triumph for open software development.

Same identical problem here. This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time I was able to solve it by replacing one of the wubi files, but I don't know what to do this time. I really don't want to have to reinstall again. I might have to go back to Windows, much as I hate it.

Can you help with this problem?
