Wireless in Ubuntu

Asked by Alex Broadbent

It seems there is a huge amount of information in various places about getting wireless to work with Ubuntu but none of it has worked for me so far. I have Ubuntu now running on two machines. One is a desktop with a Belkin USB wifi (rt73 chip). The other is a laptop - Averatec 2200 series - with a wireless card which I can't quite identify (802.11?...). Anyway in the latter case, the Network Manager can see wireless networks but not connect to them. This is rather frustrating! It seems to be running under the rt73usb driver, which is surely wrong - I've tried blacklisting that but then I'm not sure what the correct driver might be, or how to identify it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! If I get this sorted maybe I'll ask about the desktop, which is a few steps behind...

Many thanks in advance,
Alex
