graphis problem

I have got a problem using ubuntu 9.04. when ever i start the ubuntu my mouse cursore will be saw as a transperent square. thus i cant identify the actual thing that i am pointing too. But everthing workes fine when i use the option vga=771. the problem exist either i start ubuntu from a live cd or the installed one.
another problem is that i cant enable visual effects in ubuntu. when ever i try to enable it , it search for drivers and then dispaly a message that "Desktop effects could not be enabled".

My system configuration is :
processor : AMD Athlon64 X2
Motherboard : Asus M2V-MX
1 GB DDR2 ram

Please help me..

It maybe helpful to know what video adapter is in your computer. If you are not sure, this command should get the required information.

There is a possible fix on the following page. Look for the section "My mouse cursor sometimes disappears or is invisible." near the bottom.

No Problem

1) Open up the terminal
2) type "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
3) Add the following line under Section "Device"

Option "SWCursor" "true"

4) Save
5) Restart computer
