Microphone (internal) not working but sound is ok on Alienware M15X and Karmic

Asked by tstrike

Been battling this issue and have read thru about every howto and helpme on the planet.

Please review the following data collected at this address: http://pastebin.ca/1824762

I am simply at wits end and I even updated the Alsa to the latest (I think).

Part Two involve the usage of my integrated Digital Microphone that is part of the WebCam package. Could you advise?

Thanks in advance!

My output sound is resolved; however, I cannot get the microphone to work.

What other diagnostic data would you require for me to provide?

Hi :)

Just to confirm you have already run through
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
There is no harm in running through it a few times just to be certain.

Also this trouble-shooting guide, at least to give points you can tick off as having been done already
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Have any of the links helped?

Oh sorry Tom, my email replier didnt include the links so I came to the trouble report and saw them.

I am in the process of going thru those throughly, and I sincerely appreciate them. I will work on this for the next hour and circle back with the results. I did get sound working perfectly on the laptop, speaks and headphones.

Related to the topic, I did a deep dive on my camera and it is indeed integrated with the microphone. I will circle back within in the hour.

Sorry about the short response, it came from my Blackberry.

Talk to you later friend.

I guess my hour estimate was sorely overestimated. Its because of the second link that I am making the report. My issue WAS compound.

Allow me to provide a clearer status of things:

1. Sound (thanks to the SoundTroubleShootProcess) works for both the laptop's speakers as well as the headphone jack. And it responds promptly to headphone being engaged. (Solved)

2. The integrated microphone remains a distinct mystery. I have learned (looking at my notes taken at 3am in the morning) the Camera is listed as follows under lsusb:

tstrike29@torden20:~$ lsusb | grep JMicron
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 152d:0770 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp.

I did a ls /dev/video*, but it appears that Karmic doesnt see the webcam. I upgraded from Jaunty 9.04 and the webcam worked, whilst the microphone didn't.

I sincerely hope this clearly defines part two of my sound problem Tom. Again I am grateful for any assistance you can render. I have been beating my head against the wall, but with some sleep and re-reading I got my sound working properly.

Hi :)

Don't worry about the time lag. It usually takes us a few hours to get a response out there too. I changed the thread's title to try to catch more focussed attention but really now i am just waiting for someone with a clearer understanding of these issues to appear. Perhaps tomorrow. Hopefully there is enough data for them to work with but i am a bit clueless about the next step tbh

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hey thanks Tom.... I am just kinda perplexed because I am used to being able to google a problem and have to spend a couple of hours applying a patch or compiling some code heheeh...

I gotta say this... the UBUNTU community is SO Helpful!! Man o Man just reading about 120 different threads and everyone has been cool and friendly. I am a Convert... Windows 7 crashed on me and a buddy came over with this USB stick with Ubuntu.. He was like, "Dude you use Unix at work, use it at home". That demo converted me and my Alienware machine is a completely different and EFFICIENT machine!! It even runs VMware much more smoothly.

Anyway enough rambling, thank you for the assistance sir.

Hi :)

If you do google it or find an answer from elsewhere it might be worth posting the link into here 1st before commiting radical changes just to check if someone thinks it's a really good/bad idea.

There are also ubuntuforums (but i forget their address) and
http://www.linuxquestions.org
that might also be worth posting the question on just to see who gets the right answer first. If you do then paste the link back to this question to help them see what's already been tried
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/103406

Yeh, if you use Unix at work then a lot of this is probably all very much the same as Linux is unix based. There are a few differences i guess.

Tom :)

Important update:

The integrated Digital microphone is completely disabled. Only the webcam
video works. So looks like M15x and M17x with JMicron Cameras with the usbid
of 152d:0700 will have to purchase a microphone for their machines.

I did the test and it works. So again unless someone knows how to turn the
integrated Digital Microphone feature of the webcam on, use the external
microphone jack at the left side of the M15x unit.

Update:

I have downgraded to Jaunty because Karmic is quite unstable. I am still in the process of working on the sound issue but have regain my energy to work on this issue. Right now I have sound and a working external microphone with a webcam on Alienware.

Let me say this again: M15X digital microphone doesn't work. Folks will need an external microphone for Alienware M15x on any version of Ubuntu.

Hi

Thanks for the update and sorry to hear you didn't get this sorted out. The
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
usually sorts most problems out but sometimes hardware manufacturers are extremely unhelpful to linux users. There's only so much reverse engineering that linux developers can do as volunteers.

It might be a good idea to re-post this question and/or try
http://www.linuxquestions.org

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
