There is no echo, just type it and press enter.

Actually, thats not true, there is echo in the login screen.
Its true only if you do it from a text terminal.
What desktop manager are you using?

I'm thinking they mean on the gdm log in screen. It should at least show the dots for the password.

it says
Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS George tytl

George login:

whne i type george >

George login : George
Password > it will not let me write anything,

the only command that will work is Ctrl + Alt + Del (wich restarts the whole system and comes back to the same problem.

What happens if you just go ahead and type your password (even though it doesn't show anything) and press enter?

Have you changed the default log in screen by chance?

Nothing happens except it says log on error and puts the Longon: thing below. I dont think so? how would i do that if i did by accident?

are you sure you didn't have the caps lock on when choosing your password?

The problem is not big. We can get the forgoten "root" user :)

We set te "root"'s password and log in with "root"
(dangerous in internet environment! but works, and we can do anything
(any started program can do ANYTHING)
)

When we don't like danger, we can pull out the network cable.

- Just select from the GRUB's menu the "safe mode" or similar (the next from the default kernel)
- passwd root
type the password (not echoed) +ENTER
type the same password (not echoed) +ENTER
- shutdown -r now (the system restarts immediately)
- select from the GRUB's menu the delault kernel
- gdm starts (the graphical login environment)
- type root
- type THE password
- you can do anything

you can reset the password for your normal user and set te root's password to "lasiuzituagaioncuaerrgcvaukwerf" for security

Oops, I must fix it.

When I do the same that I writes (in Ubuntu 7.04),
I can't log in to the Graphical Desktop environment with "root".

Don't panic!

We can switch to tty1 (by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 in the same time),
and we can change the normal user's password when we can have the user name.

When you type "ls /home -l" you can select the correct username
and you can reset it's password by "passwd username" :)

Finally we can switch back to "gdm" with CTRL+ALT+F7.
