Canon Pixma MP 160 scanner

Asked by Jeffrey

I have this MFD and have installed printer driver from Canon web site. The scanner function does not seem to work through xsane, from Applications-->Graphics-->XSane Image Scanner. The scanner is not detected.

MP160 seems to be unsupported in stable version of Sane (it's not listed http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON ), but it has basic support in cvs version: http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html#Z-CANON So try to compile your own sane, or get another scanner.

I had visited the Canon web site and they had drivers for the printer and scanner I downloaded these which were in *.rpm format and changed them to *.deb and installed them. The printer as well as the scanner works fine. The scangearmp-common_1.00.deb and scangearmp-mp160_1.00.deb installs a executable in /usr/local/bin called scangearmp which can be run from a terminal or Alt+F2.
