new system build, fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 graphics will not work

Asked by James Dotson

built a new system mother board = biostar MCP6PB M2+ micro board. 4gigs memory, AMD athlon 64 X 2 5200+ socket AM2 CPU. the mother board has on board nvidia GeForce 6150. I wanted to install a fresh Ubuntu operating system and was going to use Juanty 8.04. when I booted the computer the live CD went to the Ubuntu screen then came up with a screen saying resolution out of range change to 1028x1024 or something similar to that not sure on the exact settings it said. I figured it was something in the bios, could not find anything there. I then went back with feisty fawn, all went well I downloaded the new 9.10 and burned to CD and samething happened. I checked the driver CD could not find any drivers on it for Linux at all. Is this motherboard and setup compatible with Linux? Dot I need to use another flavor of Linux? 7.04 works fine except the repositories are all no longer there and can not get it updated either. what are my options?

Have you added the proprietary Nvidia driver?

sudo aptitude install nvidia-185-kernel-source

or

sudo aptitude install nvidia-173-kernel-source (older driver)

Is the Proprietary Drivers for Devices selected in Software Sources?

If you can get a GUI then you can also go to System | Advanced | Hardware Drivers and enable proprietary drivers there.

Did that and it required a restart. when I restarted the system it would not go into a GUI any more only command line or like it was in a terminal window only mode. Now I can not find a way to get back in and reset the drivers to the other way..

OK... you need to install the 173 drivers then -- the card may not be matched with the newer drivers. I had that problem on a desktop I had. You should be able to select VGA mode or safe mode at boot time and then change the proprietary driver.

I tried that also and it only has command line no GUI even in safe mode.
I have two separate installs one is on 350 gigs of the hard drive the other is on 100 gigs of it, both running 7.04 feisty fawn. the one I tried to change the nvidia driver on under the GUI was the 100 gig partition. I can still boot into the other one into a GUI but can not update anything since feisty repositories are not supported any more. I can not even get the nvidia driver 173 or 185. I have been trying to get or use other repositories to get updates with, but for some reason I can not even edit any files it says I do not have permission for it. How do I correct that? I have a 8.04 and the new 9.10 but those will not allow me to see anything since the nvidia driver is not there when I boot I guess it needs to be included with the live CD right? How do I get the LIVE CD with the needed drivers.

I believe I have the problem solved. I think my whole issues was with partitioning. I made a big mess of it. I finally got my Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron working with the nvidia drivers etc. All is working fine now. Thanks to Charles Profitt and his help I kept at it and kept searching the internet and found the answers.. Just glad I have my Ubuntu back.
