Java won't work many have tried

Asked by gimpguy2000

Hi. My problem is an odd one. I cannot get Java to work on my Ubuntu 7. I have tried manual install, automatix, easyubuntu, other packages, add\remove, many command line tries by other users in the forum, linking, haven't found broken links.

If I go to a Java site, as with the main Java download page, the test shows Error, no Java, yet 6u2 is there and on my system. Other system apps detect it, not outside resources. Also Pogo games will not work and says a Java error. Nothing Java will work.

The whitelist comes up whenever I hit a java site, however, it never remembers it. They are in the whitelist, I checked. Also, I got rid of Fedora7 and went to Ubuntu for the very same reason and have literally been at it for weeks. I am admittedly frustrated to the point of never using open source again, even though I hate the "W" word.

I see no fix for this and have tried everything in my power, even a reinstall, nothing.

The main scenario: I love Ubuntu, the support, the forum friendliness, it's great, better than Fedora, and far greater than the "W" word. I am "wishing" "hoping" that there is a fix for this. My wife uses the pc as well which is why I need the java working, I can't keep OS ping ponging but want to keep Ubuntu very badly.

 Thank you and fingers crossed...

My PC is this, HP pavilion 512W \ 384 RAM \ 120 gig hd "only with Ubuntu, not windows shared"
Intel chipset, DVD burner, MX hd, 80 gig, WinXP pro, WD hd 80gig, just storage.

 Paul

EDIT: two more things, I am using the X86 not 64 which is correct for my system and I use Mozilla Firefox, latest version.

Thanks for your question.

Please open a terminal (Applications->Assesories) and execute the following command: "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin".

Please report any error you might experience. If it works, please test again. If you still can't run Java Applications, please double check Edit->Preferences->Content->Enable Java.

If both did not work, please open a terminal and report the output of "locate libjavaplugin".

Hmmm, well, I did a fresh install. So, if anyone has any ideas to maybe start from step one, it would be appreciated. I would like to take a route that is reversible if possible, that way, if it won't work, I don't keep cluttering my system.

 Thanks

Hi Helen,

I believe it was...

 sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.00/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so/usr/lib/firefox/plugins

Cheers,

Paul

Java! It worked on my first hard disk install system I did for my niece, returned an error but it worked anyways, I installed the Ubuntu Restricted Extras from the Add/Remove in the main menu, got the errors but still it worked! Mind you, It was The RC copy of Hefty Heron. All exited by this success I then went to install her wireless connection and POOF! NOTHING! It detects the wireless router, says it's on, but not a single web page can be loaded, network name and key are correct but no pages can be displayed... THE FIRST LET DOWN!

Shame...

Then I came home, I don't use wireless, so I had no worries, Thinking the April release would be better at everithing I did not anticipate problems, (naive me of course placing my faith on this crap) then lo-and behold.

Crash after crash on the updates and the sun java6 packages are corrupted time after time I download them, no matter how many time I reboot fresh on the live CD.

I used the Java 1.5 to check universal time on Ubuntu 7.10 and that worked fine but now this latest version 8.05 does not offer that on the software list.

This is crap people!!!

So much for sticking it to Microsoft!

Way ta'make asses of yourselves and making a liar out of those of us who support freeware and free software.

What's happened??? Did the Bill Gate bum licking hackers get to ya?

I've been trying all day to fix this to no avail! "Download manager detected an error in sun java6... error code exit 127" or some crap like that. I'm tired, I have bags under my eyes and all I can say is:

This sucks!

SOMEONE HELP!

DIE HACKERS AND ALL YOU HATERS OF FREE SOFTWARE.

DIE YOU RICH ASSES.

FOR SUCH LIKES ARE THE CAUSES OF THIS FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE LESS.

MAY YOUR BRAINS FRY LIKE VAIN AND SELF WORSHIPING SKANKY HOLLYWOOD STARS AND SKANKY ROCK STARS FRY AND DIE, FOR YOU SUBMIT YOUR ASSES TO THE DEVIL ON A DAILY BASIS JUST LIKE THEY DID.

SATAN FAGS!

Would someone please help us all stick it to them?

Anyone?

And this is from "install missing plugins" from the firefox applet button itself, which should work with no excuses but this is what one gets!

Perhaps this could be the result of what happens when one's thoughtless and stupid ISP decides to disable the Standby button on our modems, leaving us with no defence against malicious loosers who may try to mess with our packages after the download has finished, which I used to be able to use once all the packages were in, I would hit the kill switch on my modem, but now I can't do that fast enough, which was the only way i could get any of my computers to work properly, but now Linux is under attack, take a look!:

I'm trying to install the Java plugin for Firefox because my ebanking site needs it and it is a very frustrating process. I did what Markus Thielman above suggested and when I went to install the plugin I got
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I went do this in a terminal session and was told I needed to be a superuser. I'm the only user of this machine and I thought I had full privileges. Help!

PS I don't like to criticize Open source software but as a long term Windows user I have to say it has a long way to go in terms of user friendliness. I was persuaded to use it for ideological reasons but I found two very simple operations, installing Adobe Reader and Java, incredibly difficult. I got instructions from help eventually for the first and it worked but I have no clue how it did so. I've yet to manage to get Java working and am fast running out of patience with Ubuntu and all OS software,
