How to put dual boot on hard drive - 7.04 alternate

Asked by Marion Kadin

I have Windows XP on my hard drive. I could not properly download Ubuntu 7.04 onto disk, always errors. So I downloaded the 7.04 alternate cd and it came out fine. I put in computer, but when it come to partitions, it said I would lose all of my data on any partitions I have removed and the ones that I am formatting. It says the following partitions are going to be formatted: partition 2of IDE1 Master (as ext3) and partition 5 of IDE1 as swap. I do not want to lose the windows I have on, is it being removed or not? I am confused. I am using my laptop to send this message while that window is still sitting on my desktop. Can you help me please????Thanks in advance

Hello,

When you are at the partitioning step, remember not to remove or format any partitions on which you have data. You can guess which partitions have your data by its size. Please boot into Windows, and make a note of the different partitions you have along with their sizes and free space. Then restart the Ubuntu setup, and at the partitioning step, compare the partitions shown with the ones you noted down. Do not remove or reformat any partitions which match the data you recorded.

As an extra hint: your Windows partition is very likely to be partition 1 of IDE 1.

Hope this helps.

We don't know how many hard disks you have, how they are partioned and what software is installed where, so we can't really help you.
Partition 1 of IDE1 is most probably WinXP, so if the installer is offering to format partition 2 of IDE2 it should be ok.
You can look at this guide for some more details about how to install a dual-boot system:

Yes I got it installed and have windows. However, I am now finding that I do not have a full window in some of the windows, especially trying to set up my printers. I can highlight printer, but can't find any icon or button to push llike forward that was missing on another window I was in, I believe that was evolution. What is going on and how can I fix this
