i keep getting errors on downloads"E;clamav-base status 1

i am new to ubuntu but every time i update or download i get error E;clamav-base status 1 or fatal error

Apparently your ISP or other internet provider (university or apartment service) is running the clamav anti-virus suite which is blocking your downloads. Please check with them to make sure this is the case.

In case this is not the problem, please go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager, and search for clamav. Please check whether it is installed or not (has a green box before it). If yes, you might want to uninstall it and see if it helps.

As you suggested I un installed clamav which appears to have rectified the problem. Thanking you for your prompt responce.
