Is it for new installation? You should boot either on a LiveCD or LiveUSB before you could partition an active drive.

Hi,

You need to boot your computer with a live CD (it includes Gparted). Then you can edit your HD partitions easily.

Hi :)

Here's a guide to getting a LiveCd session working
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Please let us know how this goes. Generally i would say the fewer partitions the better although there are some excellent reasons for having specialist partitions for certain circumstances. We might be able to help you set something like that up if you like but really it is usually better to keep 1 large space for data and give it as much room as you reasonably can.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
