Try to login (you will not see anything when you type password,bit it is O.K.) and type

startx

or

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

This usually means that you're meant to log into the command line. Type your name, then press enter, then type your password. Once this is done, try typing the following:

sudo start gdm && logout

Enter your password when prompted. Hope that helps. By the way, some people consider it a little rude to use ALLCAPS; it looks like you are shouting.

Hi :)

Is this a recent problem in an Ubuntu that worked well until recently or is it a fresh new install of Ubuntu?

If it is a new install is it Ubuntu Server Edition? Ubuntu Server is meant to run from a command line and doesn't have a gui desktop because servers dont need to do anything like play games, watch movies, paint pictures or anything like that. They only need to share services between client desktop machines. In many ways the desktop editions are really superior to server edition because they have to do a lot that servers don't.

If you have an Ubuntu Cd then please could you try it as a LiveCd on the same machine and see if you can get to a desktop this way?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
