System timer resolution is too low

Asked by Greg Nancarrow

I've installed Rosegarden. When I run it, I get the message:

System timer resolution set too low
Rosegarden was unable to find a high-resolution timing source for MIDI performance
This may mean you are using a Linux system with the kernel timer resolution set too low. Please contact your Linux distributor for more information

Any ideas? Help available? Thanks in advance

You should install the low-latency kernel.

Ah thanks very much for that - I had no knowledge that 1 existed.
I found http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/admin/linux-image-2.6.20-16-lowlatency on the web which mentions linux-lowlatency meta-package. Is there an ISO image that I can download and run? (I am a hardware engineer/Windows/loser type but I can get help from someone competent if needed :-)

No need to download an ISO image, just use your preferred package manager to install the package linux-image-2.6.20-16-lowlatency (I assume you are running 7.04). Note that you must have the security or universe repository enabled.
It will be installed alongside your present kernel and you will be able to choose which kernel to use at boot time.
