dvd's will not play on dell b130 using ubuntu 9.10

Asked by Steve

I have a dell b130 with a celeron M processor. I am running Ubuntu 9.10. The operating system is great and I am learning lots, but am unable to watch DVD's. When a disk is inserted the volume will spin up. VLC will play the "Welcome" screen and that is about it. Movie Player will not loadup the movie stating that an "Error has occurred. Unable to read resource". Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx

First have you gone and installed VLC ... great media player one of the best and greatest things is the codec packeg that comes with it.. another thing is 9.10 will play most dvd's after you get the codecs but it will still not play all dvd's a problem still in the works, i downloaded VLC and then got the ubuntu restricted extras and gstreamer extra plugins and you can do that through the ubuntu software updater under applications.. at the bottom.... ubuntu software center, and it will give the copyright codecs to veiw dvd's and other video formats. if this doesnt work respond and i will try to help further

Yes, I have seen that many times. But it works for me if I start the player manually from

Applications --> Sound & Video --> Movie Player

and then

Movie --> cdrom0

(in rare cases I need 2 attempts)

Disclaimer: I'm still on 08.10

Can you help with this problem?
