A lot of people seem to be working on this problem on why Ubuntu 9.10
freezes, I have Ubuntu 9.10 and it only froze 2-3 times in about 1 and
a half year. So here is how you can uninstall Ubuntu 9.10: First
backup your "/home" folder by copying it to external hard-drive or
dvd's. Then use an 8.10 Cd (or 8.04) Cd to 'reinstall' bu when you get
to the partitioning section try "Manual Partitioning". Make sure that
all the Partitions are UNticked in the "Format Partition?" column.
Also edit the ubuntu partition to make it's "Mount Point / ", the /
mark shows where to install Ubuntu.

If the system is freezing before you can start your web browser, then chances are good it has nothing to do with the web browsers you choose to use.

I'm curious about several things: First, are you using any closed-source drivers for your hardware? Second, are there any error messages in /var/log/kern.log or printed on the console? Third, have you run memtest86 or memtest86+ on your hardware recently?

If you are using Intel video cards, this bug report may provide some clues #492271. My PC has intel 82945 cards and it started freezing under 9.10 immediately after upgrade. A workaround was to edit compiz-manager file to change compi_name to metacity and mark visual effects = None in Preferences-->Appearance. I am still awaiting bug resolution, and am without compiz effects.

Can you help with this problem?
