I installed nvidia-glx-new from Synaptic Pakage Manager, I deleted the /etc/X11/ xorg.conf file and now I have 1280X1024 resolution
if I add the xorg.conf file I do not have 1280X1024 resolution

i have installed ubuntu 9.04 amd64 and this appears to still be a problem, as i cannot choose 1280x1024 resolution. i tried to install the latest proprietary nvidia driver too, but 1024x768 is the highest i can go.
i tried the suggestion above to delete /etc/X11/ xorg.conf ?? but that just resets the display configuration and i am in like 640x480 resolution, then i have to boot to recovery mode and use xfix.
