install software after installation of Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by KeesvanMeurs

If I want to install software after the installation of Ubuntu 9.10, then the installprogramm ask for the DVD with Ubuntu KARMIC KOALA. The dvd is already in my dvdplayer but the programm will not install and keeps asking for the Ubuntu DVD. The problem may be that the laptops dvdplayer does not work. I installed Ubuntu from a external dvdplayer/-burner (USB). I'm a novice to linux. How do I solve this problem?!

This is an Ubuntu question rather than a Launchpad question. I have changed it to Ubuntu instead of Launchpad itself. Hopefully you'll get more responses, I'm sorry I cannot help you directly. :)

Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file, and comment out the deb cdrom:.... line. (There may be a way to disable the cdrom 'repository' from the GUI package management tools; look around for it, if you're more comfortable there than editing configuration files.)

The way I look at it, you -might- be able to avoid downloading some large files IF those files haven't been updated since the disc was made. That is pretty unlikely, especially with big packages. (More code == more bugs. :) But in the time it takes to spin up a typical CD drive, a typical internet connection will have already connected, downloaded, and started installing the typical package.

So I don't see much need to have the cdrom repository loaded, and I haven't had it on any of my systems for ten years.. :)

I'd the same problem, in fact I run my Ubuntu from my portable hard disk. I worked around it by mounting an image of the Ubuntu DVD using Gmount-iso. Its not really a solution, but it worked, anyway. Furius ISO mount seems to be more popular as an ISO mounting tool.

Can you help with this problem?
