Grub Boot-up Error

Asked by srikumar

I am using a Dual Boot with Win XP and Ubuntu 9.10 (with latest upgrades)

I am unable to boot into Win XP. The error message is as follows:-
error: invalid signature
Press any key to continue...

The Grub Boot Menu for Win XP is as follows:-
drivamap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1

I've tried :-
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
and then the password
this brings up a blank screen for menu.lst

Perhaps this is due to the fact that the backup HDD was changed to a new one?

How to get over this ?
Any suggestions ?

Thanks
srikumar

You don't have menu.lst because karmic uses grub2. The file in question is grub.cfg and you can't edit it directly. You will find instructions on how to repair grub at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/grub2 under the heading "Recover grub via LiveCD" which will also work for grub legacy if you want to downgrade.

Sorry, I mistyped. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2 is correct.

Thank you for the response.

I have read through the instructions which go into a number of pages and have found it to be rather confusing.

In the circumstances it was easier to re-format the hard disk and re-install WinXP and Ubuntu. The only difference being that I opted to retain the existing Grub 1 version and did not upgrade to Grub 2. This solved the problem and everything is working as normal.

Thank you
