installing dos and windows after xubuntu

Asked by sophie27

Hi all!
I've installed xubuntu on my pc, deleting all that was on the pc before.
Now I would try to install ms dos 6.22 and windows 98, without corrupting xubuntu.
First of all, I've tried to install ms dos 6.22 (from an ISO cd-rom) but without success.
In fact, I'm not able to partition the hardisk in the right way. I'v tried to do it with the command fdisk, but I think I've done something wrong...

How should I partition the disk before installing ms dos???

Thanks all.

I don't believe that it is possible to install dos or windows on the same hard drive as xubuntu without it overwriting a critical portion of it. There may be some ways to work-around the problem, but for "out of the box " installations the general practice is to install DOS or MS Windows first. These legacy operating systems need to write to the boot sector of the hard drive. Xubuntu, on the other hand, has a bootloader capable of managing other operating systems.

If you must have DOS or MS Windows installed, here are some basic steps to take:

1. Back up any personal data (including email, bookmarks, etc.) that you have in the home directory of your existing Xubuntu installation.

2. Install DOS or MS Windows.

3. Reboot the computer using the Xubuntu LiveCD.
     - From the Kmenu -> System -> GParted

[See http://www.howtoforge.com/partitioning_with_gparted]

     - Resize the FAT (DOS or MS Windows) partition on your hard drive to make room for Xubuntu.
     - Re-install Xubuntu by clicking on the "Install" icon and you should be ready to go.

I just happened to stumble on this tutorial on "How to install Win ontop an UBUNTU install" I bookmarked it with the intention of using it one day. I notice the url suggests that it is for the exact opposite, but I know what I saw in the article.

Can you help with this problem?
