failure to start x server issue

Asked by Anthony

I have tried to install ubuntu 7.04 twice now. It boots to the ubuntu screen fine but when I select install it shows the ubuntu loading screen and then brings up a really messed up text screen and gives me a error message and crashes. Any help would be appreciated. Any more info needed let me know

Thanks but I don't think that this is the issue. I just tried again and it gave me and the error message is that my x application failed so it cannot open the graphical portion it states that I need to configure it and then retry. I think that my processor is fine a P4 at 2.4 and 512 mg or ram with 16 gb free hd space.

I have a Dell 4100 dual-booting Feisty now and agree that your hardward should be adequate.

Have you tried the CD integrity check option shown on the LiveCD startup screen?

Yes I tried that and it says that everything is fine with the cd. I just ran it again and a more and I now have more details on the error message that I am getting. I says after I choose install ubuntu and if goes thru the loading process but before it gets to the actual ubuntu page that "there was a failure to start the x server" and it asks if I want to see the x server output. When I say yes the error code is bcm43xx.microcode5.fw not available or failed to load. Then another window pops up and states that the x server is disabled and that I should restart GDM when correctly configured. I'm thinking this has to have somthing to do with the drivers for my graphic controller which is the XGI Volari XP5. Any suggestions? I really would like this to work on this computer and it is just getting frusterating.

I have looked around and I'm thinking that it is the graphic controller. I have two Ideas that I would like to try one is to use the vesa driver off of the live cd and the other possibility I read about is that I can install an updated driver that is supposed to fix my problem the only thing is that I don't know how to do either. Is there a way to choose a driver in the command prompt and to update the driver do I have to burn it to a disk then use the update driver install option at ubuntu boot? Any help would be much appreciated.

Try Ubuntu Alternate or the safe graphics mode, please.
This will resolve the problem during the installation. If not, I think it is an hardware problem.
