disk read errors

Hi!! My grub gave me an error 25. So i took out my hard disk, and attached it to another ubuntu pc.
herein it was found that the initial sectors of my first partition(having grub) had damaged sectors. So i tried to fsck in another pc, which failed. Also i tried to use gparted to format that partition but this failed to. i then tried to install ubuntu on that hard disk using a live cd, but as the partition is corrupted the live cd refuises to load. the screen goes in a blank mode and does not proceed beyond that. now i don't know how to install ubuntu onto that hard disk. should i be using systemrescuecd to format that partition. is this a bug??

Could you tell me if the problem hard disk is spinning up? Or is this a Solid State Drive?
What version of the live cd are you using? 9.04, 9.10, 10.04?

If it is an IDE drive then you can try reformatting the drive at a low level and hope.. but IDE drives usually spare out bad sectors so if there are still bad sectors visible then the drive may well have failed beyond repair and have to be replaced. If the sectors in the boot sector are damaged then you cannot copy boot software onto it, and yes the Ubuntu installation will fail as soon as it tries to write to this area of the hard disk.

Its a SATA 160GB- Seagate hard disk. i am using 9.10- live cd. I am not trying to install the os onto the partition. The live cd refuses to load beyond the initial menu. The screen goes blank. one cannot see the desktop. I can see the data on all other partitions- when i connect this hard disk to another pc. Do i have 2 replace the disk or should i load the os on other partition.

Using gparted i tried to format the corrupt partition- it gave me the following error:

I recommend that you backup any data you have on the problem hard drive. SATA drives also have a reserve area in which they swap bad sectors with. If your drive fails to swap the bad sectors, then its very likely out of reserve sectors, and about to fail soon.

You could also (if available) check the S.M.A.R.T. data on your hard drive, it will give you some more information. I'm not sure why the live cd won't boot, I've never been able to test Ubuntu in this scenario.

You could use another OS to format the partition and write data, that way you will know if the hard disk itself is the problem.

Conclusion: to me, it sounds like your hard drive is failing and there is not much you can do. You may want second opinion though, I've never owned seagate hard drives.

thanx a lot guys!! used windowsxp installation cd to format the corrupt partition in fat32. then used ubuntu 9.04 live cd to install ubuntu. ur idea worked for me 'kpk'. u made my day
