Unable to install Ubuntu on Compaq D518/P1

Asked by roddyjoff

Hello,

I have a Compaq D518/P1 (1800mHz cpu) machine that I would like to install Ubuntu on.

I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu Server software onto a CD but when I start the installation procedure I receive the error message -

'This Kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.'

Does this mean that the latest Ubuntu software is not compatible - if so I am puzzled because I am under the impression that Linux will run on a clockwork toaster?

Is there an alternative version I need to download?

Many thanks,

Dave.

You need to download the 32-bit version. The version u r having right now is for 64-bit processors.
And perhaps your processor is not 64-bit.
Moreover are u sure u need a server edition than desktop edition?
If u need desktop edition then
Use the link :

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

and select 32-bit version.

If u really need server edition
then follow :

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-server

and click on 'Alternate download options' (below green button)
From there select > 32-bit

and then download.
