Graphical log-in to please the kids...

Asked by george_rutkay

The lowest common denominator (Windows) has the graphical log-in screen the kids prefer over having to type their name (it doesn't matter that they have to type their password, go figure).

Is there any way to implement a similar graphic on log-in that the kids can decorate with their favourite picture?

My step-son likes the performance Linux has over Windows. He's only 11. It would be good if his experience on Linux could be reinforced.

There are a lot of options here but none will be just like windows. First, visit http://gnome-look.org/ and look for a GDM theme you like. Not all will have the login options like you are looking for but some will. Take a look at this one

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Avio-GDM?content=37395

Download it and then open up the GDM tool. It under system - admin - login window. Click on local. Most of the ones you download should be "packaged" in a way that you can just drag and drop into the space with the current options to install. There is an add button too. Click the check mark next to the new theme (you may also need to uncheck the old theme). Now if you log out you should see the new login screen. Themes similar to the one I linked above will use an image for each user depending on what they have selected. I believe you select your image under "about me" (system - preferences - about me). Click the icon and select a new image.

That should do it.

Oh, one more thing. Under "about me" when you click the icon it gives you about 25 choices for your "face". If you don't like any of them you should be able browse to any other directory and choose your own. I don't know what the requirements are for size but it seems to scale it anyway so might not be a big deal. However, it might be good to resize whatever image you like to 96x96. That's the size of the default faces.
