Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

The following link contains a ppa that you can add to your system and that should allow you to install a new driver - packagename should be rt3090 - for the RT3090 wireless chipset in Ubuntu 9.10:

Hi, sorry if this sounds stupid but:

I could followed the above up to Step 4

In Step 5: Enter the following commands to install the driver:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install rt3090-dkms

Where do I enter these two command lines?

(I put those lines in the sources.list but this doesn't work)

Ok I have the same card and it is not working but the problem is diffrent now.

Netbook
MSI Wind U230
1.6GHz AMD Congo Neo X2 processor
ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics
Memory: 4GB
HD:320 GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Preamium 64 and Ubuntu 9.10 amd 64 Dule Boot on 3 partisions

It did show my wirless network after I fallowed the instructions for the fix but will not conect. and it works fine on Win 7.

when I ran the first comand "sudo aptitude update" it gave me an error: "GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net karmic Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY FF370EF786F4C28E "

Is there a way to fix this?

Peter you put the; sudo aptitude update, and sudo aptitude install rt3090-dkms commands in the terminal not in the sources.list file.

Hope it helps you! I still cant get on line.

Hi again, I worked out that the command lines go into Terminal :). I get a few messages about "software not recognised" and "answer with Yes/No" (which I answered all with YES).

I did reboot and the booting is very slow now (about three times as long as before). I do get wired internet but still no wireless is recognised.

Which means I have to stick with Windows 7 for now (which works with wireless). Ubuntu is a little more difficult than I thought :(

BTW, I have:
Netbook
Intel Atom N450 processor.
1.66GHz processor speed.
1GB DDR2 RAM.
10in screen size.
Resolution 1024 x 600 pixels.
160GB SATA hard drive.
Intel NM10 graphics.
Multi card reader.
3 USB ports.
Bluetooth.
1.3MP webcam.
802.11 b/g/n wireless enabled.
Windows 7 Starter operating system trying to change to Ubuntu 9.10

Thanks David Alexander, just seen your message now.

Forgot to mention that the Netbook is model
MSI U130
and the wireless adapter is
RaLink RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe

which I checked before with Everest under Windows 7.

The newer Ubuntu releases have an open driver, rt2800pci, which works with the RA chip you have (Since I have an MSI 130 also). I blacklisted the rt2860sta, and let the rt2800pci pick up the wireless. I did have a real config file in /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat instead of an empty one. I got mine when I downloaded the source for compilation, but copies are on the web, edit to suite your location if an empty one does not work for you.
