hash not listed on website after MD5SUM

Asked by carters51

I am following the steps to install Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on my machine. I have downloaded and burned a image onto a CD. When i went to verify it with the winMD5SUM utility it gives me a check sum of "5e516338fe6eab9605d208f2fd0ee0b1". Which is not located on your website. Is there another location for that I can use to verify or do I need to try to burn it again. Thanks for your help

Hi,

The MD5SUM should be located in the directory, from which you downloaded the ISO file, e.g:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/

There is a 'MD5SUM' file which you may consult for sums obtained from tools. If the MD5 sums do not match, you will have to redownload the ISO image.

Hi, Try to do the checksum on the cd image before you burn it. Do it on the .iso file. According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes the hash for 8.10 amd64 should be f9cdb7e9ad85263dde17f8fc81a6305b.

If the CD image verifies OK but the actual disk does not work properly try lowering the CD burn speed. If you choose the maximum value you'll increase the chance of errors when you burn.

This page where you asked this question is for website related questions, not for general support. On the download page you saw after the CD download began there was a link to this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM It has an explanation of how to check your CD. Try those steps and if they don't work check out http://www.ubuntu.com/support for a list of excellent support resources. A popular option is the Ubuntu Forums where there's an "absolute beginners" forum where even the simplest questions can be asked.
