Install Ubuntu on PC with 2 HDD

Asked by Randy Mentor

Is there a step-by-step somewhere that will guide me through the process of installing Ubuntu on a PC with two HDD, and sharing the same drive as the other OS?

The Ubuntu installation doesn't detect the other OS and present the usual options as it does on a single disk install. I have to choose "something else".
What my friend wants is dual boot with Ubuntu on the same drive as the other OS. (The second hard drive is personal storage). I'm a little too nervous that I may wipe out the other OS, rather than share its drive.

I've been looking around but haven't found the 2 HDD scenario where the same drive is shared.

I'd like to return to my friend's full of confidence to install a dual boot on the shared drive.

Please. :-)

I'd install Ubuntu on the drive that currently has no OS. Keeps things cleaner, and eliminates the "doesn't play well with others" failure modes.

Since you're in Vancouver, you might want to reach out for hands-on tech support here: http://www.meetup.com/ubuntuvancouver/messages/boards/forum/1245793 to get your friend on his/her way. Better still, have them join the group ;)

Hi Randall this is Running wolf from Kootenay Ubuntu in bc how are you doing

are you installing these 2 hard drive on a laptop or a Desktop Tower . if you are installing the 2 hard drive on a tower then you can format the empthy storage are drive with a compatible format using G parted, then install the 2 hard drive on the proper motherboard channel. you can find this information on you motherboad manual. If all is installed well you will be able to have the 2 hard drive installed on the computer tower.

if it is a laptop then and you have only one hard drive bay on it .You will have to partition the drive in 2 part using Gparted or you can install ubuntu on the laptop hard drive and use a portable hard drive for backing up your data

Can you help with this problem?
