My laptop is stuck at 'grub rescue'

Asked by NSB

Can anybody help me get unstuck?
My dell inspiron has a media button, and I accidentally touched it. The thing crashed my system, and now I am stuck at grub rescue. Can anybody help me walk me through this ordeal? I have already done the following:
1) Live USB of Ubuntu 10.10 which was what I was using
2) tried to play around with grub rescue, but nothing happened. I followed advise here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/ihom8/grub_rescue_help/

... but its no use. Give a brother a hand?

Hi NSB,

If you've tried the GRUB reinstall (described in the link you provided) and it didn't help then I think you may be well and truly hosed.

What did you see from the Live USB system? You might be able to recover your home directory if you're lucky. In any case you are looking at a reinstall. Great opportunity to update to 12.04.

Kim

hi guys,
Ubuntu fixed itself! So, I touched the media button again, and let it go through its process. It blanked, and a few seconds later, the splash screen showed up! Everything is working again. Whoa. Thanks canonical and the ubuntu team for making a kick @ss product.
now, time to go 12.04...
