Creation of new translation team ubuntu-l10n-yuw

Asked by Nungon Localization

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS BEING POSTED FOR THE THIRD TIME AFTER RECEIVING NO RESPONSE TWICE. WE ARE ANXIOUS TO BEGIN LOCALIZATION WORK; PLEASE HELP!

Hello,

I am Dr. Hannah Sarvasy and I am a linguist at the Australian National University who is proposing to work with the Nungon people of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, to localize Ubuntu for their language Nungon, which is a dialect of Yau with ISO 639 code <yuw>. I will be working with Dr. Jason Johnston of Appen, who will be assisting with software issues, and a small team of native-speaker translators working in the field.

Regarding the check list at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/KnowledgeBase/StartingTeam, these points have been addressed as follows:

Existing team: There is no existing team for this language.
Natural language: Yau/Nungon is a natural language with approximately 2000 native speakers.
Locale, keyboard and fonts: I have submitted a locale definition file yuw_PG to the glibc maintainers (Sourceware Bugzille Bug 20952, submitted 2016-12-08 22:47:31 UTC). The file had been tested locally on an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS system and found to work. I am hoping that we will not need to wait on acceptance of this to commence translation, as I understand acceptance by the glibc maintainers can be quite a lengthy process; alternatively I will be glad of your advice on any steps I can take to expedite the process. The language uses the Latin alphabet with only one common accented letter (o-umlaut) and accordingly does not require any special font or keyboard support.
Launchpad team: I have created team ubuntu-l10n-yuw, for which we are requesting approval.
Subscription policy: I have given the team a Restricted subscription policy.
Team information: As membership of the team is by invitation only, there does not appear to be a need for guidelines on how to join, etc. However, I will be happy to add such information if it is required.
Team communication: I have created a mailing list for the team: <email address hidden>.
Guidelines: Translation guidelines will be prepared once the team is approved and we have access to translation source files.
    Upstream collaboration: Noted.
Coordinator: I am the coordinator. I will subscribe to the the ubuntu-translators mailing list when the team is approved.

Sincerely,
Dr. Hannah Sarvasy
Coordinator, ubuntu-l10n-yuw
