how do I connect two computers with a crossover cable

been a month trying to find out if this can be done, took a week for me to find out I needed a crossover cable and not a lan.
I have two computers both running 12.04 one crossover cable, one modum, commputer one is plug into the modum, computer two is plug into computer one with the crossover, computer 1 is on the web computer 2 is not. but both are saying Active Network Connections and are showing the arows.
Q.1 can both computer get on the web with this set up and if yes how????
Q.2 can I shair files with both computer with this set up, if yes then how???
I'm talking over 55GB of files and growing everyday(BIG)
 I'm going to need step by step instruchsion I have no clue. I've tryed to read about it but its all greak to me. if I was 5 years old I would know how to do it, but I'm 50 and when reading about it I get lost in the computer E's
 from what I've read I may have to change the Ip address or smoething like that. but like I said I'm lost, lol.
(suck that spell chack dont work here sorry if I got any word wrong) can anyone help thank you.
