Why we should translate UI elements manually?

Asked by AsstZD

Why we should translate \button{}, \checkbox{}, \tab{} etc. contents manually? Isn't this what gettext is ultimately for?

Using gettext is on our 'to do' list for future work. But for now, there's no way to know which application and which dialog the button text refers to, so the translation can't be pulled in with enough confidence. As far as LaTeX (our typesetting system) is concerned, it's all text. It has no way of communicating with gettext.

Can you help with this problem?
