Thanks for the question.
Do you just get this error message? Or does it stop there?
Thanks

with the "update-manager -c -d" there are two problems: the splash screen is too slow (7-8 minutes!) and ubuntu doesn't see my optical devices (cd rom and dvd writemaster)....in computer' s folder it call them CD-ROM1 and CDROM2? (cdrom and cdrom1 in "edgy") with only root permission, and it doesn't read them!

Yes I have always the same problem, and after 20' s installations go bad i returned to edgy!!
ok i try to explain:
with the live cd and alternate after start installation feisty said to me:
/bin/sh/:can't access tty job control turned off
(initramfs) [60.932775] ata2.00 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
[...numbers.
[...numbers.
but if i write "acpi=off" in the F6 options ubuntu start with:
[...numbers.
[...numbers.
without the "/bin/sh/:can't access tty job control turned off"
and after a lot of time (it tries to find something) the installation goes on
but with the same problems i have tell before.
with the update-manager nothing change....
at last i tried also with the DVD of feisty and the first time (without the F6option) it start with:
[...numbers.
[...numbers.
instead with "acpi=off" ubuntu started immediatly!!! and without problem!!!!!
but it's during only for two restart....and after the problems come back to me....and after this the installetion
from dvd became like livecd and alternate.
Be Patience with my english and good work for everything
thanks
bye

I have similar messages if I have a HD with a dead controller connected to the bus. Could it be that you have a bad drive ?
> ata2: port failed to respond (30 secs.....)
This means it has tried to connect to the HD on port 2 and has not gotten any response.
I hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem. I was able to install PCLinuxOS without a hitch and both of my cdrom drives appear to be working properly. I've tried to install feisty many times and always get the same response:
"/bin/sh : can't access tty : job controle turned off
ata2 : port failed to respond
and_request : i/o error"
This continues until the installer quits (after about 6 tries).
I'd really like to try out Ubuntu. I tried removing one cdrom and I've tried using a different HD for install. So, either both of my cdroms are bad or something else is going on.
My hardware:
Motherboard: Asus P4P 800 Deluxe
Processor: Intel P4, 3.0G
CDROM drives: #1. Yamaha #2. Generic 52x
HD: Western Digital 250 GB
Video: Asus/ATI Radeon 9200 SE

There is no problem with dapper and edgy installation, the installation failed only with feisty.

I've experienced a similar problem with a peripheral blocking my boot:
http://
I suspect it is possible for Ubuntu's boot process to be more resilient than allowing a peripheral device to prevent it from booting.
