Blank screen after login Ubuntu-gnome

Asked by dr4c4n

I have an Asus zenbook ux501vw that I'm trying to install Ubuntu-gnome on and I can't get 2 main issues resolved: 1st) full disk encryption according to the installer does not work, I get it installed, it asks me for the password, then says cryptsetup successfully set up then the boot hangs, if I press ESC quickly after entering the password there are several messages (that I googled and didn't find any resolutions for), 2) when I install without encryption, sometimes the boot hangs after I type in my password and I can't ctrl-alt f1 or f2 for terminal, I just get a blank screen. When I'm installing the fan is constantly on high and if I do get to login, it is always on high, how I resolved it once was installing a new kernel, this last time after installing latest stable kernel 4.7.4 I ran into the blank screen problem again. Any suggestions?

The laptop also doesn't shutdown on its own, I have to hit the power button to turn it off after the installer says to restart.

Hi dr4c4n,

Can you tell me if the downloaded ISO matches the checksum provided for the ISO?
Before choosing a install option did you check that the ISO was burnt/transferred correctly and that the "Check disk for defects" option didn't return any problems?

I just want to make sure that those two things were done before we can move on to determine if this issue is not disk related for your second problem.

Regarding cryptsetup there are some bug reports already about it hanging after the password has been provided.

Thanks

I see the notebook also has NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960M with optimus support, it is possible you have hit this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1559576

Hi Bruce,

The downloaded ISO does match the checksum:

md5 ubuntu-gnome-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso
MD5 (ubuntu-gnome-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso) = d068d5471285ee66124a3797cad79544

which matches with the value posted on the ubuntu gnome download site.

I've used dd to write it to the usb key. I also ran check disk for defects - it returned with no errors.

Hi Bruce,

I have also tried to install Ubuntu 14.04.4 and the installation was successful (without full disk encryption at least), however my trackpad does not work on kernel version 4.2, and the wifi does not maintain a connection properly. However, the shutdown / restart issue doesn't occur with this version. I have found several people on the internet were using wily (15.10) on their Asus Zenbook ux501vw, but I cannot find a copy of this for ubuntu gnome. I am going to try the installation of 16.04.1 again with full disk encryption, and then again without, and I will see if I can update you with more of the error messages that I get. I would really like to get this working, and am willing to provide any more information that you need.

Hi again,
So I have attempted to follow the instructions as provided on http://marclewis-1204.appspot.com/2016/04/25/installing-ubuntu-16-04-lts-on-asus-zenbook-ux501vw/ and I thought I would update you as to what happened during this attempt. I ran the 15.10 wily installer, upon reboot, there was no mouse cursor, and the trackpad wouldn't work. So I ran the updater which did a kernel upgrade first, then asked to upgrade the entire system to 16.04.1. After the upgrade it was at kernel 4.4.0-38 and running 16.04.1 however the fan speed was constantly on high. So I attempted to follow his instructions and downgrade the kernel to the 4.3.5 wily kernel, upon installation of this and removal of the 4.4.0 kernel, when I rebooted I get a black screen. Have you got any suggestions as to what I can try to get this machine up and running smoothly?

Another update, so I downloaded the latest Ubuntu gnome 16.10 beta 2 release iso, and ran the installation. I did not choose any additional software to include in the installation, I did run the updates as I was installing. The installation finished, my fan wasn't on high, and it appeared during the installer that the touchpad was working. I was very hopeful. Then I restarted as instructed at the end of installation. The computer rebooted, got to the login screen. I was able to select my username, I entered my password, and the screen froze. It was a grey screen, not blacked out, and I could still see the mouse but not move it. Should I report this anywhere?

So I downloaded the latest daily Ubuntu gnome 16.10 release, before logging in, I switch to the terminal, I installed nvidia-367, this enables me to login graphically, but stops the touchpad from working, in order to get the touchpad to work I had to switch from the graphical interface, over to another terminal with (ctrl-alt-f3) for example, then back to the graphical session (ctrl-alt-f2) and now everything is working. However I'm finding bugs in the daily build which is to be expected. The settings application doesn't load. But I'm happier now that I can actually login!

I have installed the latest daily build of Ubuntu gnome 17.04, I still had to switch to the terminal and install nvidia-367, however with the latest version the touchpad works fine. All applications that I've used seem to be working fine as well.

HI dr4c4n,

Glad you got it working with 17.04. I apologise for not responding, I haven't been very active in the community for the last couple of months. Would you mind marking this question as Solved?

Thanks
