I wondered the same thing, and asked about it in Bug 727733, in which the last status update was given. In short, there was a holdup on deciding the scale of the font, but that's been decided and a beta should be released Real Soon Now.

Hello George. You are welcome to join the font beta testing team. The 'UbuntuBeta Mono' is currently (May/June 2011) included in the version of 'ttf-ubuntu-font-family' in the PPA:
