Quotes look odd in XeLaTeX

The curved quotes get rendered correctly in the fonttest tool, but look odd in XeLaTeX.

They have not been translated by TeX... what's in the PDF are the original Grave and Apostrophe used in the source.

Initially I thought this might be because the appropriate glyphs were missing, but 0x201c/0x201d are present in the font (although perhaps not correct for some reason)...

Paul is right. The example file is missing this line:

\defaultfontfeatures{Mapping=tex-text}

Only then will fontspec enable the magic character replacement of `` and ''. That it works for the top paragraph is just because that font is not routed through fontspec. It is the default cm, or ec series that TeX processes itself.

Not a bug.
