please help to uninstall uninstall uninstall ubuntu 8.10

I do not know of an "uninstall", but can give a suggestion on how to make it unavailable.

Some caveats however, if Linux is installed on a Windows disk drive, the partition originally assigned will be lost, only format will regain it. You may not want to format your Windows C:\ drive at this point. If Linux is on a different disk no problem.

Go to Question 61139, there you will find a Windows XP method of removing Linux, it is somewhat crude, but works.

i installed ubuntu 8.10 on a new hard drive so how do i uninstall it

Apart from uninstall, what do you want to accomplish?
also a bit more info about your equipment and other software would help

the only thing iwant to accomplish is to get rid of ubuntu 8.10 off my hard drive which is on a dell dimension l866r

When you start the computer, does it start Linux or wonderful Vista???

computer starts with ubuntu 8.10

how old is this l866r
does your computer have a CD or DVD drive
do you have any operating system disks like Ubuntu or Windows
or floppy disks with MS-Dos
did you install Ubuntu
any experience messing with computers

my dell is about 6 yrs--has acd anddvd drive --i installed ubuntu with a
disk--and i have a xp disk and ubuntu is the only os on the hard drive and
i dont have computer expertise and when i ask to uninstall a program i
assume its like a windows problem where i just hit a button and presto it g

OK, thanks for that info. You should know that operating systems by nature do not provide an option to uninstall, after all a lot of stuff can be lost

Now do this:

Get the XP disk and insert it in the cd drive, then start the computer.
One of two things will happen, either a Windows or an Ubunto startup screen will show. I'll assume Windows

Windows will present you with a choice, either install, or repair
choose r for repair
next screen will have a 1 and some question, enter 1
now there should be a prompt c:\
enter help
a long list of activities should show, move to the end of the list and at the prompt enter help diskpart
you should get a report on your hard drive and some info what you can do, delete partitions is one of those.

if you like you can delete the Linux partitions, that will get rid of Ubuntu

then if you want to clean the disk off completely you can at the prompt enter help once again and find the format activity, enter that at the prompt and your disk will be formatted and no more ubuntu nor anything else.

If you want to keep whatever else is on the disk , find fixmbr and enter that at the prompt, and you next boot will be Windows if it was on the disk

hi--- i insert xp disk but ubuntu comes up but the disk icon is on screen
and i hit it and programs are on screen with --autopromt-- which does not
work because an error notice comes up-- i also hit i386 and a load of items
comes up but none work when ihit them-- error again--so what to

Well I just got up.
You installed linux on a blank disk, if so and you your system does not boot the CD, then you need to change the boot sequence in your system's BIOS from harddisk, floppy, cd drive to cd drive, HDD, floppy.

This will take a bit of work, but is not difficult
When the system first starts, theer should be a screen wit some info about the system, also a way to access this BIOS, either pressing del or F2 or some such thing, you need to press this before Ubuntu starts.

Go do this now and get back

Further, when you get into the BIOS, using up and down arrows to get around find an item called "boot sequence" press enter, and look at the list. Within this list move cd drive to first position. then exit, the screen will tell you how, most likely the ESC key be very careful not to change anything else.

When finished with the BIOS, restart the computer with the Windows CD in the CD drive.

Windows should now boot, and you can choose what to do either repair or install. Do the repai if allyou want is a clean disk, if you want WXP, install
