PHP-FPM breaks WooCommerce API calls intermittently on Ubuntu 22.04

Asked by carljames

I'm running a WooCommerce store here: https://theoncloudshoes.com

Recently, I noticed a recurring issue where:

WooCommerce REST API calls (especially admin-ajax.php) time out

Logs show intermittent PHP-FPM child process failures

This impacts everything from cart updates to third-party plugin APIs

Steps to reproduce:

Install WooCommerce on a WordPress instance (PHP 8.1, Apache)

Use a plugin that makes regular AJAX calls (e.g., currency switchers, Cloudflare cache plugins)

Monitor /var/log/php8.1-fpm.log and watch for child process failures

This bug affects frontend behavior and causes random 502s.

System Info:

Ubuntu 22.04

Apache 2.4.52

PHP 8.1.2

WooCommerce latest

Please let me know if logs or config dumps are helpful. Thanks!

This really has nothing to do with hardware certification. This attached FAQ has some information on where to possibly get support for issues like what you’re describing.
FAQ #1945: “Where can I get help or technical support?”.

Can you help with this problem?
