Shutdown problem with Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9th on Ubuntu 20.04

Asked by Nicola Carrino

For at least a month my new Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9 with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS does not power off correctly. Either by the command line or by GUI, the shutdown is not completed correctly.
The CPU seems to go into halt but all the LEDs from the keyboard remain lit up indefinitely. Most importantly the fan starts spinning and from cool, the PC gets warmer and warmer. I noticed this the first time because the battery went from 90% to 0% the next morning. The only ways that I found to shutdown are:
1. give the shutdown command and then when the Thinkpad enters the previous problematic state, to press the power button for 10 seconds
2. reboot into Windows and shutdown from there, where everything is working fine.

I even tried to reinstall Ubuntu 20.04 LTS a couple of times but the problem does not change.
I have found a couple of question related to Ubuntu 20.04 and the Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9 specifically, so I think there is a general problem with shutdown between this device and Ubuntu. These are some:
