Feedback on the Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 1 (202008-28201)

Asked by Robert Milling on 2021-04-16

The Ubuntu 20.04LTS 64-bit certification details for this Lenovo Thinkpad model mentioned inclusion of the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2. Indeed, that works, but apparently not with full functionality. I tested with two external monitors connected to the two Display Ports on the back of the dock and with the Thinkpad lid open. These external monitors were treated as a single monitor with content mirrored.

In my tests, I checked that Ubuntu Display settings were set to Extend the displays and the associated graphic showed the built-in display and a single external display, side-by-side. Ie. the internal display was treated as the primary display and the two external monitors as a single secondary display.

Are there additional monitor configuration settings available somewhere in Ubuntu other than the Display section of the Settings?

I expected that Ubuntu would identify two external displays and provide Display settings to select any logical order and to select any monitor as primary. With the lid closed, I similarly expect Display settings to select any logical order for the two external monitors and either to be selected as primary. My primary use will be with lid closed with bluetooth connected mouse and keyboard as well as the two external monitors. I expect to power on and boot/restart in this docked configuration.

Note: The dock firmware was updated via brief use with the OEM loaded Windows 10 and preinstalled Lenovo System Update utility. I have not yet attempted multiple external monitor tests with Windows 10 as that involves swapping back to the original storage.

For comparison, I successfully used a similar arrangement with an older Thinkpad W540 with corresponding docking station, external mouse/keyboard, and these same two DP connected external monitors.
