Feedback on the Lenovo ThinkPad P17 Gen1

Asked by avpet

I am running an Ubuntu 20.04 on my Thinkpad P17, although it is not a preinstalled one (my had Windows on it), and while mostly it is working great, I do experience an occasional kernel failure once a few days - everything stops working, even "REISUB" not helping, so the only option is the a reboot using the power button so far. I upgraded to the latest firmware and the latest kernel, and was analyzing the logs, but so far have not found anything suspicious. But the thing is that I really do not want to get back to Windows, to the point that I am coping with these occasional restarts. Would be nice if Lenovo started shipping P17 with Ubuntu since I may eventually get an update with fix.

A small update: looks like the upgrade to 5.8 kernel solves the freezing issue. I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10 , which is not LTS though, and the problem seems to be gone. So I guess everyone who wants to use use Ubuntu on a Thinkpad P17 should either install Ubuntu 20.10+ , or if someone wants an LTS version, wait until the April of 2021 for the version 22 which will be LTS.
