Fingrprint reader not supported on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3rd Generation

Asked by Loïc Martin

The laptop is allegedly Ubuntu certified, however this only cover a limited number of this model. All models shipping with a fingerprint reader have this reader not supported under Ubuntu (unlike older generations), this is the case for other Thinkpad models of the 2016 and newer generations (X1 Carbons, T4##, T5##, X2##...)

Lenovo changed the model of fingerprint reader for a model whose manufacturer doesn't support Linux and thus didn't provide support for it in the Linux kernel.

See https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Other-Linux-Discussions/Validity-Fingerprint-Reader-Linux/td-p/3352145 for the official Lenovo answer.
