Feedback on the HPE ProLiant DL380 G5

Asked by Rafael den Heijer

This is not a question, but rather a notice...

I successfully installing Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS on an DL380 G5 with Smart Array P400 (not i) using LVM.

Graphical user interface runs a little slow, but that's probably because it's not meant to run GUIs (especially Unity) and maybe also because it is not configured properly....

Thanks for letting us know!

You MAY be able to find a magic combination of drivers and config to help speed up graphics, but as you suggested, we do not support running GUI environments (or the desktop install) on server hardware.

No matter what you do, I doubt that Unity will run fast or well at all, as the ES1000 graphics card on that system is pretty low end and has no 3D acceleration at all.

If you absolutely need a GUI environment, you may do better with one of the light weight environments like lubuntu or xubuntu (though of course neither have been tested and are not supported officially).

There is a nice list of recognized variants here: https://www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/flavours

Perhaps one of those (the ones I mentioned above are on that list) will give you better GUI performance.

Can you help with this problem?
