Feedback on the Dell PowerEdge R630 - failing matrox g200 support

Asked by Mike White

I have a Dell R630 which worked quite well under 12 - however, when we upgraded to 14 (and plans for 16,) we discovered that the graphics performance was quite poor. This appears to have been caused by X.org dropping some feature support - see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1316035

Since the MGA200 is on the server mainboard and can't be replaced, what does this actually mean for "Ubuntu Hardware Support for the Dell R630?" Is there a real fix that I'm not aware of? Or will the R630 be removed from the supported hardware list?

Please see the attached FAQ for more information. But the short version is that we do not certify GUIs on Server hardware. The Ubuntu Server install does not provide any graphics support beyond the standard console and so we have never tested, nor certified, a desktop environment as part of Server Certification.

That said, if it helps, the G200 is a pretty old device, and you may do better with one of other desktop flavors. Here's a list of variants that may help, but please note that not all of them are "officially supported".

Additionally, the R630 WAS tested successfully with both 14.04 and 16.04 (https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201409-15513/) so it may be worthwhile to file a bug for that against xorg

Thanks for bringing that part of the FAQ to my attention.

There is a bug open with X.org - https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91933

Can you help with this problem?
