Dell PowerEdge T430 X11 startx failed

Asked by Andrea Chua

OS: Ubuntu Server LTS 16.04 (amd64)

I am trying to setup a lightweight openbox desktop environment for the T430 and installed the following packages immediately after fresh installation: xinit, xorg, openbox, lxappearance.

Using the command "startx" gives this error message and failed to enter openbox desktop environment.
> (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

The monitor that I am using is a 1280*1024 Hp monitor, connected on the motherboard vga port (to Maxtron G200 i suppose?).

I have performed the same installation steps on virtual box and on another physical machine as well and both of them could enter openbox desktop using startx.

I would like to know if this is an issue with the built-in display adapter or something that I might have missed out.

Installing desktop versions on server hardware is not a supported configuraton, but the attached FAQ can point you to places that you can get some help solving this. You may need a proprietary driver (I don't recall if there is one for Matrox cards or not).

FAQ #1945: “Where can I get help or technical support?”.

Can you help with this problem?
