Feedback on the Lenovo ThinkPad P50 - Walter

Asked by wjl

I am an IBMer, and I can confirm that Ubuntu 14.04.5 runs on the Lenovo Thinkpad P50.

Installed it myself in UEFI mode, and all hardware worked with that Xenial kernel.

I had to set the graphics in the BIOS to 'discrete', and I also installed a daily build of intel-snd-hda to make sound via HDMI and Mini Display Port (all tunneled out via the Thunderbolt 3 'Alien Ridge' chip) work.

Otherwise, all hardware worked right out of the proverbial box.

As soon as 16.04 LTS is certified IBM-internally as a basis for our 'Open Client', I'll change to that.

I would also take Debian if that were allowed.

So, thanks to you all (and to Debian) for a great job.

You may use these tips for owners of this laptop if you wish.

Cheers,
Wolfgang
