Feedback on the Dell PowerEdge R730

Asked by Max@StarWind

Hi,
Does 14.04 support also mean backward compatibility with 12.04?
Do you anticipate any issues with running 12.04 on R730 or R730xd?
Thank you for your support!

No. Certification implies from the Version certified forward through the life of the LTS.

For example, if certified on 14.04.2, it is certified for every 14.04 point release from .2 onward (.2, .3, .4, .5) but NOT considered certified for 14.04 GA or 14.04.1.

Likewise if certified on 14.04 GA, it is considered certified for all 14.04 releases, but NOT for 16.04, nor for any interim release (14.10, 15.04, or 15.10)

I could not comment on anticipated issues, because I've never run 12.04 on that hardware.

That said, I don't expect it would give you that much trouble. The two biggest points of concern would be Network and Storage. In this case, the NICs are Broadcom 5720 based which HAVE been tested/certified in other Dell models on 12.04.

The PERC cards in those two servers, however, have ONLY been tried with 14.04. If anything were to give you problems, that is where I'd expect to see it.

Good Luck

Jeff
