Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter not working on Dell Latitude E7250

I just tried to connect my Dell Latitude E7250 to an external display using a mini DisplayPort (mDP) to VGA adapter, but it didn't work. No display was detected by the OS. Does anyone know how to get this working as being able to connect to external monitors is quite essential for a laptop?

I am running Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS Trusty.

As the MiniDP -> VGA adapter is not in our scope of certification, I would suggest you to go to the community, please check the FAQ here.
