Install Ubuntu 14.04 on Lenovo ThinkPad T550

Asked by Tom

I want to install Ubuntu 14.04.3 on my Thinkpad T550. Therefore I downloaded the ubuntu-14.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso from the official website and created a bootable USB stick. I already used the Pen Drive Linux's USB Installer, Linux Live USB Creator and finally Rufus. I even checked the blocks with Rufus and actually everything should be fine.

Unfortunately I am not able to install Ubuntu, because there appears only a grey screen after I select "Install Ubuntu" or "Just try, dont install". If I press some arrow keys while loading I can see a terminal and error messages like:
Squashfs error: Unable to read fragment
Squashfs error: zlib decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Squashfs error: squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x564543something
Squashfs error: zlib decompression failed, data probably corrupt

I already searched a long time in forums and a lot of people have the same problem with their Thinkpads (usually T440), but unfortunately I couldn'd find a solution. The posts to this topic are actually from the beginning of 2014 and I can't imagine that it is impossible to install Ubuntu on Thinkpads. Consequently I would be happy if you could help me.

The error messages probably indicate that something went wrong when creating the USB stick.
Have you performed a MD5sum check on the .iso file before writing it to the USB stick?

You might try re-downloading the installer .iso file.

I checked the md5sum and received a wrong checksum:
14c2901165aa2f0d591c68ec53404298
Then I re-downloaded the same .iso file and received the right one:
cab6dd5ee6d649ed1b24e807c877c0ae

Next, I created a bootable USB with Rufus and installed everything without any problem.
Well, actually I had the problem that it was not possible to choose between Windows and
Ubuntu. If someone gets the same problem you can find the solution here:

Danke Manfred !!!
